At Excel we believe that the strength of our personal and business networks is vital to our success. Our customers, supply chain partners and consultants are vital to the performance of our business and help to share technical, commercial and industry knowledge as well as underpinning our mission to provide industry leading customer service.
From March 2017 we are running a quarterly lunchtime business network encouraging representatives from local and regional companies across the construction industry to get together over a light lunch and listen to one or two short briefings offered by one of our network partners as well as growing their own networks to benefit their business.

Event #4 - FRIDAY 1st FEBRUARY 2019
After a prolonged break we are delighted to be running the 4th lunchtime networking event.
As some of you may know Excel Structures are keen to support young people as they transition from school to the world of work. Owner and Director, Jason Pritchard, volunteers as an Enterprise Advisor via SEMLEP offering assistance to Sharnbrook Upper School in Bedfordshire. We are delighted to be holding this event at this at Sharnbrook Academy and that the session will be attended by a number of students.
Continuing this theme we are delighted to welcome Ally Adams and Kirsti Wells as our speakers.
Kirsti is Business Development Executive at Construction and Design Centre of Excellence (CADCOE), award winning providers of fast-track digital apprenticeships 2D CAD design, 3D design and Building Information Modelling (BIM) across the construction industry. With the fast pace of change within the construction sector, it is essential that we equip our young people with world class skills and training. CADCOE are facilitating a new generation of construction careers across digital design, construction and operation of our built environment.
Ally Adams, along with his colleague, Daniel Harker-Barnes, developed an interest in media whilst studying at Sharnbrook Academy. They enjoyed it so much they started a business with a little help and guidance from Ally's father Steve. They now run a thriving young business and have developed a growing client portfolio across a range of industries including property and construction, sport, engineering and consultancy to name a few. Epic Tech Media provide high quality video using the latest equipment and digital technology.

Lunchtime networking event #3 will be held on FRIDAY 6TH OCTOBER 2017
We are delighted to welcome Peter Rayner and Harvey Walker to our third networking event in Bedford.
Young people face many challenges when moving into the workplace. Employers regularly complain about the quality of school leaving applicants for vacancies. The construction industry experiences a significant shortage of young people entering a range of careers in our sector. Young people are the life blood of our industry. Peter is the Enterprise Advisor Network Coordinator for SEMLEP (South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership) and will be telling us about their work supporting early engagement between schools and businesses.
Off-site building systems are now commonly used in UK construction across all sectors. Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) is a method of construction enjoying significant growth across Europe, the United States and now here in the UK. Harvey will be summarising the features and benefits of this amazing building system with so much to offer. Channel 4's Grand Designs recently featured the use of CLT on a self build project which has raised awareness and interest amongst those seeking to follow the self build and custom build routes to their ideal home.

Our second lunchtime networking event focused on supporting businesses tender activity with an additional focus on Health & Safety
Beckie Staincliffe gave us a useful update on the current health and safety thinking and offered opinions about the potential impact on H&S legislation of our exit from the EU . In addition to ensuring that our businesses have a focused and effective approach to health and safety, Beckie outlined how we should incorporate our credentials within a tender to support to greatest effect.
Katy Berrill provided a summary of ideas to support the strategic approach to tender opportunity selection, bid presentation and content - if we don't win business, we don't have a business! Many of us dedicate significant resource to preparing quotations and tender bids, Katy's overview provided a chance to reflect on our approach and consider strategies for improving our effectiveness and conversion rate.

Our very first Networking Lunch was was very well attended. Our theme for the day was centred around the future of housing design and delivery. Our guests enjoyed two very enlightening presentations which prompted some lively discussion and debate.
PassivHaus design principles are widely accepted as delivering healthy zero energy homes. Alan Budden, Managing Director at Eco Design Consultants and expert PassivHaus designer gave us an update on PassivHaus in the UK and work that he has been doing to develop additional design templates delivering low carbon/low energy housing performance.
The future of housing design, delivery and performance is link to the fast paced development of digital technologies. Whats coming in the not too distant future will make 'controlling your heating from your phone' look like beta-max video! Paul Surin, Head of the Built Environment at global corporate Wienerberger provided a fascinating insight into his work on digital construction incorporating BIM modelling and intelligent control systems.
