Load Bearing Light Gauge Steel
30no 3 Storey Apartments for Social Housing Provider, South London
light gauge steel
Excel Structures were engaged by a South London D&B contractor to design, supply and install this load bearing lightweight load-bearing steel structure for a prominent social housing provider. Load bearing light gauge steel works well on medium rise developments in densely populated areas. This method eliminates differential movement, a characteristic of standard timber frame construction, allowing other trades to commence before the panelised structure is complete. In addition, there is a reduced fire risk during the construction phase.

This structure included a drive through to the rear parking area and cantilevered feature oriel windows at the rear of the development. In addition, bolt on steel balconies were provided by the main contractor fixed via thermal break connectors to steel posts within the structure provided by Excel. Hot rolled structural steel posts and beams were also incorporated to support the cantilevered triangular oriel windows.

Excel Structures built this 4 storey block of apartments on top of a two storey concrete podium on a land locked site with difficult access. Now operated by Wandle HA, these apartments feature a second floor terraced area and a flank wall built on a boundary with a bus depot creating further H&S and logistical challenges.
